Committed to securing safe, fenced dog parks for the socialization and enjoyment of dogs and their owners on Vashon

FIDO’s Journey: An Update on the Push for a Dog Park on Vashon

FIDO has been tirelessly advocating for a safe, fenced, off-leash dog park on Vashon Island since 2015. In our November 2025 Letter to Supporters, we share a look back at our efforts, the challenges we've overcome, and the exciting momentum we’re building now.

Key highlights include:

  • The long road to securing land, with multiple sites evaluated

  • A major policy breakthrough: the successful push to change King County Code Title 7

  • Encouraging recent developments—including a promising new site and growing political support

We also outline how the community can help, from identifying potential properties to joining our board or simply spreading the word.

We invite you to read the full letter for a deeper look at our mission, recent wins, and how you can be part of the next chapter for Vashon's dog lovers.

It’s official! King County Council approved off-leash dog parks in unincorporated King County. We just don’t have a fenced park on Vashon.

  • Reviewed the history of efforts like ours

  • Built a cadre of supporters

  • Created an organizational identity

  • Obtained non-profit status

  • Informed our community of our goals and objectives

What We’ve Done

  • Visited properties that might be suitable for a park

  • Provided proposals to Vashon Parks and King County Parks for fenced dog parks

Where You Can Take Your Dog Off Leash

Thanks to recent conversations with the Vashon Parks District, we now have a clearer picture of where dogs can enjoy some off-leash freedom on the island. Below is an updated list to help you and your four-legged friends explore safely and respectfully.

Agren Park
Trails in the wooded area have been a popular off-leash spot. New guidance from VPD, King County, and the Land Trust now states that dogs must remain on leash in this area.

Winghaven Park
A great option for energetic dogs and owners who enjoy a good climb. Parking is limited, but the trails are beautiful and rewarding.

Point Robinson
Dogs can be off leash on the north and south trails from the upper parking lot. Off-leash access is also allowed on the beach, except near the waterfront rentals.

Burton Acres
Wooded trails across from Jensen Point provide another nice place for a walk. Check local signage for any updates.

Sunrise Ridge
As of March 2023, dogs are not allowed. Please plan ahead before visiting.

Community Care Center
Dogs can be off leash on the walkways behind the center. The nearby Shinglemill Trail requires dogs to stay on leash.

KIRO Field
This is not an official park, but it is a friendly place to walk your dog. There are no dog waste stations, so please bring your own bags and take your dog poop with you.

KVI Beach
Another informal dog-friendly location. Please be courteous to nearby residents and always take your dog poop with you.
